This is an informal interview, which will take place in ______ on (date) ______. The co-investigator/interviewer, Newton Lajuan, will ask the interviewee to respond at length to questions about ________ and specifically about the interviewee's life experiences. Also the interviewer will ask the interviewee to share any traditional stories he knows.
The purpose of the interviews is to preserve the oral culture of the Marshall Islands so that the youth of this nation can better acquaint themselves with the rich past of their elders. It is also to make this culture available to researchers in order to better understand the people of the Marshall Islands.
This interview is voluntary, and all responses will be documented in writing as well as digital recording. All stories gathered will be archived by the Nuclear Institute and the Marshall Islands Story Project in accordance with National Park Service guidelines.
Publication of these stories - - either on the Marshall Islands Story Project website or in print format - -will be a non-profit venture. If profit is gained from this venture, the proceeds will return to the organizations for further research.
At any time during the interview, the interviewee can refuse to answer a question, can indicate that he/she is only answering a portion of a question, or can terminate the discussion. Also, at any time, the interviewee can request that his/her responses be withdrawn from the study.
For the sake of accuracy, the stories will be attributed to the story-teller. However, the story-teller may request that a pseudonym be used. To the knowledge of the researchers, there is no threat of physical, mental, or emotional harm to any interviewee in this study.
